Waiakea Water to Switch to a Fully Degradable Bottle in 2018

Hawaiian premium drinking water company, Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water, announced in September 2017 that it would be switching to a 100 percent recyclable plastic and fully degradable bottle in 2018. The move is a significant step aimed at enhancing sustainability, which the company is keen at.

The switch will see the company as the first to apply nano-additive technology. They will intervene in the plastic waste management process by chemically weakening the bottles during the manufacturing procedure. The technique accelerates the natural degradation process as it turns the plastic into a degradable carbon-based wax.

According to Ryan Emmons, the founder and chief executive officer of Waiakea, the achievement comes after years of experimenting. The company now has a patent on the degradation of plastic from the United States.

Presently, Waiakea Volcanic Water uses recycled polyethylene terephthalate, a material that uses less energy to make, to offset the concerns of using plastic bottles. Additional efforts that the company engages in to allow sustainability include practices in their water production efforts aimed at minimizing emissions and lowering the carbon footprint

Their efforts in reducing carbon emissions have seen the company certified CarbonNeutral, a certification given by Natural Capital Partners. It awards enterprises that implement renewable energy practices and reduce emissions.

Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water was founded in 2012 by Ryan Emmons. Access to the volcanic water when he spent time there gave him the inspiration he needed to start a bottled water company that employs unique and sustainable processes.

Their volcanic water goes through a natural filtration process that goes through the most active volcano in the world, Mauna Loa. The mountain peak is located in a remote area away from possible pollution and unnatural additives. As a result, there is a guarantee of the water’s purity.

Before getting to the Waiakea aquifers, it passes through volcanic rocks that enrich it with minerals, calcium, potassium, and electrolytes. It also undergoes purification that removes acid, making it naturally alkaline. These qualities are beneficial to the body which places Waiakea Water among the best brands you can have anywhere in the world.
